Recently, my friend Dmitry Shapiro asked: “Why are so many great developers spending their time trying to create products specifically designed to addict and help us waste our time?”
[...]
It is fairly common for people in the technology community to fancy ourselves intellectuals. We scoff at the general public for being vapid and shortsighted while we aspire to attend the likes of TED and Davos under the pretense that we are the real game changers — above the base distractions of the “common” man. But are we really any better than those who think what Lindsay Lohan wore in court this week is big news? Or are we equally guilty of following the allure of fame and vain diversions? A closer examination of trends in the tech community would suggest that we’re not all as exceptional as we believe ourselves to be, and before we assume that we deserve the mantle of intellectual superiority, we would do well to take a closer look in the mirror. The current bubble we face isn’t driven by valuation or funding but by our acceptance of mediocrity.
[...]
And although we act the part of intellectuals and world changers, most of us are so reliant on social proof that the first question we ask when considering a conference or event is, “Who else is going?"

Francisco Dao. Tech community, are we MTV or TED?

"There's a lot of confusion about universal grammar [...] Universal grammar is just the name for the theory of the genetic component of the language faculty. I mean, transparently there's some genetic component, there is a reason why my granddaughter reflexively identified some part of her environment as language related -which is no small trick, nobody knows how to duplicate that- and then, more or less reflexively, picked up the capacity that we are now using, whereas her pet, say kitten or chimpanzee [...] with exactly the same inputs couldn't even take the first step -it couldn't identify part of the environment as language related- obviously not the latter steps. Well, there are two possible answers to how that happens: one is 'it is a miracle', the other is that she has some specific genetic capacity [...] This is not controversial for anything except human higher mental faculties. For some reason when people investigate human higher mental faculties they have to be insane, you know [...] Everything else in the world we study by the standard methods of science, but when we talk about human higher mental faculties we have to become mystics, so therefore there is a controversy about the existence of universal grammar, which means a controversy about whether there is some genetic property that distinguishes humans from everybody else, which leads to the ability to do what we are now doing. But there shouldn't be any controversy about that. The only question is 'what is it?'"

La condición postmedia (I)

[...] Those of us who work with digital art often debate another convergence --the convergence between art world and computer art world. I recently came to the conclusion that this particular convergence will NOT happen.
[...]

But let us return to the battle between Duchamp-land and Turing-land. Shall I conclude from my analysis that now, as Duchamp-land has finally discovered computers and begun to use them with its usual irony and sophistication, gatherings such as ISEA and Ars Electronica should simply be abolished? Probably not. These gatherings do play an important function of being a buffer zone, an interface where the world of culture at large and the world of computer culture meet each other. Sometimes we even see artists genuinely pushing the boundaries of new media aesthetics, i.e. going beyond what is already accomplished by flight simulators, new computer games with their AI engines, MIT Media Lab projects, etc. In short, on occasion artists are able to compete with computer researchers, rather than simply creating new demos for commercial software, thus functioning as "memes" for computer industry.

What we should not expect from Turing-land is art which will be accepted in Duchamp-land. Duchamp-land wants art, not research into new aesthetic possibilities of new media. The convergence will not happen.
